Scouts go Scuba Diving - 30-10-2009
Recently the scouts had the oppotunity to attend a scuba diving taster session. The sessions were an introduction to scuba diving.
Everyone was "kitted out" with fins (flippers), a mask, and an air supply. Gareth (our scuba instructor) gave some brief instructions (like how to avoid flipping on your back and getting stuck at the bottom of the pool), and some safety rules. He also taught everyone the basics of underwater communication.
After a quick trip down to the deep end, to make sure everyone was comfortable, they were allowed free reign to "play" in the pool. Hoops were thrown into the pool for people to swim through and "torpedoes" (underwater darts) were available for people to throw to each other.
The sessions were enjoyed by everyone. Each of the three sessions were fully subscribed and universally enjoyed.
Due to the success of this introduction to scuba diving we're looking into the possibility of running a proper PADI course next year. This should lead to a basic PADI license for open water. Unfortunately, due to PADI restrictions, this will probably only be available for the over 12s. The hope is that, at the end of the course, we will have a lakeside camp that will include some open water scuba diving.
